The grand opening of the Caldas de Reyes race track in Galicia, Spain was simply amazing. Despite being scheduled for the previous weekend, in which the weather didn’t allow for racing, on January 22, 2006 the race event drew no less than 45 drivers from all over the region.

The race track was in pretty good condition, and the remarkable the work was done by the kids of the Correcaminos (Roadrunner) www.correcaminosrc.webecindario.com
Very quickly, and with almost no means, they built overnight a worthy race track.

At 10AM the drivers meeting was held, in which all were informed of some changes to the rules, mostly for the electric cars than the nitro cars.

In the first qualifying round, up came the challengers for the podium finishes: pole position Cristian Villar (9 laps in 5:23), followed by Jose Porto in second and Jose Luis Rodriguez in third, who managed 9 laps in 5:30.

In the second qualifier, with the track more pot-holed, the results didn’t change from the first round, with 1-2-3 again being Cristian Villar, Jose Porto, and Jose Luis Rodriguez (respectively).

The D, C, and B finals were 15 minutes long with the following results:

• Final D 1st Josito Peteiro, 2nd David Louzao, 3rd Javier Herranz
• Final C 1st Manuel Casal, 2nd Alberto Fernandez, 3rd Fernando Tobio
• Final B 1st Jose M. Mato, 2nd David Fernandez, 3rd Pedro Lueiro

And so we come to the A, which was 30 minutes in length. On the start it was Cristian Villar and Ivan Cerdeira that got away from the rest of the pack, gaining over 10 seconds over third place. For the first 15 minutes, we could see a clean fight between the top pilots at the front of the race. Behind them were Jose Porto and Jose Luis Rodriguez – who was experiencing some problems in one of his wheels – leaving him off of the podium. A minor problem with the timing upset the drivers, but it turned out to be no big deal at the end.

The final results were:

1. Cristian Villar XRAY / SIRIO

2. Jose Porto
3. Ivan Cerdeira

The public crowds were big during the event, and the spectators followed the race with enthusiasm. XRAY XB8 cars were well represented at this event, in both XB8 and XB8R versions. This is due to the excellent job done by dealer Micromodel in Spain who is doing very well in supporting the XRAY brand.

Greetings, and see you soon!
